As part of residential expansion requirements a Suitable Alternative Natural Green Space (SANGS) had to be secured and delivered to fulfil a number of green infrastructure functions to offset potential harm to nearby Ashdown Forest statutorily protected by SAC, SPA, SSSI and AONB designations. The SANGS identified comprised a number of existing fields and hedgerows and a series of studies demonstrated its accessibility and potential network of links to other rights of way, the long term management of the site through traditional cattle grazing regimes and the enhancement of biodiversity through additional protections, indigenous planting and periodic hedgerow layering.
