staines town centre

Winner RTPI Award for Urban Areas and Communities 2003

The pedestrianisation of Staines High Street, in conjunction with wider improvements, proved to be a watershed in improving the image and economic success of Staines. Previously struggling to compete with its immediate and better known neighbours of Windsor and Reading the scheme re-connected the shopping core to the River Thames. Now a series of squares, pleached lime groves and performance spaces has attracted people back to the town leading to improved and more diverse retailers, a popular street market and new quality redevelopment.
